2020-2021 20% Time/Genius Hour
September 30, 2020
Hi, my name is Natalie and I am working on my with my friend Jayden 20% Time/Genius Hour project. For our project, we are making a children's book on google slides. We chose this project because I like to write and Jayden likes to draw so it was perfect, but the main reason for our book is to try to help kids understand racism and show how it can affect someone's life. We hope to make a children's book that can help teach children about racism in a child friendly with a lion and a zebra as the main characters. https://kindlepreneur.com/how-to-write-a-childrens-book/
10/7 I had finished my fifth paragraph today and plan on doing one more. I made the change to put every two paragraphs into a page. I learned that after you go through airport security you have to go to boarding checking pass. I found that 5 to 9-year-old vocabulary isn't as high as I thought it would be. So I am going to underline the higher vocabulary and put the definition at the bottom. I have set a goal to do at least a page every Wednesday. https://traveltips.usatoday.com/step-by-step-first-time-air-travel-guide-12490.html
10/ 14 I just finished writing my 6th and 7th paragraph. I made the decision to make the higher vocabulary lower instead of underlining it. I made supporting characters that are Springbok and are a part of showing the way that Leo is facing discrimination. I found out that the elderly and young kids go on the plane first. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Springbok
11/4/2020 I wrote the twelfth paragraph. Leo and his mom finally made it to Ethiopia. He is excited and scared. I plan for Leo to get to his house after and to go to school the next day. I need to speed up the book more because it hasn't even talked about the other main character Zoe. The book is probably going to be 7 chapters. I need to talk to Jayden about the other Illustrations. I need to find out where in Ethiopia Leo is going to live. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Map_of_zones_of_Ethiopia.svg
1/6/21 I should have made more of a layout of the story because the book is going kind of slow in my opinion. The character Leo unpacked his belongings in his room and is about go to school. My plan is to try to speed the book up more because it is taking a longer time than I expected for Leo to go to school. I talked to Jayden one other illustration that she plans to do is a window of an airplane which is supposed to be Leo's view when he was in the plane. She also plans to illustrate a picture of Leo in a classroom after I write about him going to class. One problem that I had was a paragraph getting accidentally deleted and having to rewrite it but I think we are making progress. 1/13 I finished two paragraphs and Leo is about to go to class. Jayden started to draw a picture of a plane window to show what Leo might have seen. I learned that Lemurs live in Ethiopia and that I need to speed up on the writing. I should start to make names for characters in Leo's class. I named the middle school Preppy Middle school, but will probably change it later. Next Wednesday I need to look up other animals that live in Africa, but mainly Ethiopia.
1/20 Today I finished paragraph 10 and started 11. Leo just got to his classroom. I've decided that he is only going to have one teacher that teaches all subjects and he is going to be in sixth grade. I need to talk to Jayden about other illustrations she can do. My plan is to have his new school Preppy Middle School is going to have a faster teaching strategy and Zoe is going to be at the top of the class. I honestly don't think that this was the best choice for my 20-time project, but I'll still do my best.
1/27 I completed only paragraph 12 today because I used some time to make another layout to help me speed up writing the children's chapter book. I also brainstormed with Jayden on what illustrations she should make. We came to the conclusion that she's going to middle school and then draw Leo in the classroom with Zoe. In paragraph number twelve Leo got to class and had a hard math test that Zoe secretly helped him with.
2/3 I did half of a paragraph because I needed to ask Jayden about details. I don't really think the book is about racism because at first, I tried to make situations to try to show it in a kid-friendly way, but it's hard to because when I try to sugar coat it the situations don't really show the same meaning. I think I should have chosen something else to do and should have had more thought of how the book would go because I originally planned to make it about 4 or 5 google Docs pages long.
2/10 Today I finished the twenty-paragraph. I asked Jayden if Leo eats fake meant was okay and she said it was kind of dark for a short chapter book meant for children so I switched it with a Southern African dish called vegetarian bobotie. I think Jayden is working on an illustration of the front of the school. We have decided that the book is going to be on Google docs because there is too much writing to put on Google slides.
2/17 I finish paragraph twenty-two and fix mistakes that I had made in previous paragraphs. I learned a little bit about a South African dish called injera. I found out that it is a spongy pancake-like bread that people put different types of food on. I think I will ask Jayden if she would like to illustrate a picture of both bobotie and injera.
2/24 Today I had trouble writing, so I brainstormed with Jayden, but when I was ready to write it was time to go to my other class. So I didn't get any writing done today, but I at least know what to write about next Wednesday. I also asked Jayden if she would like to draw bobotie and injera, but we ended up settling on her drawing Leo and Zoe sitting at lunch tables.
3/17 I finished paragraph 23 and I was going to put that Leo got a ride from Zoe to his apartment, but then realized that almost every good parent wouldn't allow their child to be driven home by a random stranger. Jayden is still working on the picture of Leo's apartment. I think I am almost halfway done with the children's short chapter book, but I think that at this point the "message" that I was supposed to create doesn't show. I overestimated my writing skills.
3/24 Today I wrote half of paragraph 24. After I finish the fourth chapter I plan to try to finish the book with chapter five. I hope that by the end of March I will have it done. Jayden says that she is almost done with the picture of the apartment and that she plans to start to draw a picture of Zoe and Leo having lunch.
4/7 I finished paragraph 24 today. I wrote about Leo telling his mom about Zoe had to rewrite my plan for the rest of the book because I lost it. To prevent me from having to rewrite it again I wrote it on the last page of my science notebook this time. I need to ask what pictures Jayden has made because I had written them on the notes that I lost.
4/14 Today I only did half of paragraph 25 because my time got cut short in class. I plan for Zoe to ask Leo if he wants to come over to her house and form him to go this time. I think I am going to write about how Zoe's parents feel about Leo in the next paragraph.
4/21 I wrote a few sentences today because I had trouble writing. I corrected some spelling and grammar errors instead, so I didn't waste time. Next Wednesday I have to ask to be in a breakout room with Jayden because I have a few questions to as her. I don't think I will be able to finish writing, but I will finish as much as I can.

I like the project even though it looks like you didn't get to finish at least you made progress. I like how you added multiple images and links. Overall it sounds like a good book and by reading your blogger it also looks like a hard project.
